(African) Tradebeads - Ashanti Beads & More

Trade Beads

Africa

Trade Beads are glass beads that were manufactured in Europe and were traded to both Africa and the Americas. This barter trade started in the 15th century and lasted until the early 1900’s.
Most of these beads were made in Venice, but also in Bohemia, the Netherlands, Germany & France.
They were traded for goods (gold & rum), but were also used to buy slaves in Africa, where they replaced the more traditional currencies such as cowry shell.
In Africa they are still treasured today. Ever since the 1960’s they are becoming more and more popular elsewhere and are (mostly) sold from Africa to Europe and the USA.

So antique trade beads are becoming rarer.

Fur Trade Beads - America

Fur Trade Beads were mostly bartered for fur with the  native peoples of North America and Canada.
These beads are also highly collectible and the good old beads are becoming rare.
